featured work: Sex, Skulls, and Citizens by Ashley Elizabeth Kerr

Project concept
To provoke a visual dialogue with the cover titles and an interest in the text. By showing a skull [from the title], gender and "race" [from the subtitle] are impossible to see [woman vs man, Indigenous vs European].

Sex, Skulls, & Citizens won the Best Nineteenth-Century Book Award, Latin American Studies Association Nineteenth-Century Section, in 2021. My work for this project beyond the cover concept/jacket design/visuals included researching cover imagery and assisting with getting legal clearance.

The use of red emphasizes the seriousness of the scholarly work and is also suggestive of the "Sex" of the title. An aged paper tone background reminds the reader that this is a study of texts from the late-nineteenth-century.

Red is flooded across the back cover in a reverse of using it as an accent color on the front. The black area contains a considered description of the book, while the red areas contain more passionate opinions on the work from other authors.

The color scheme and mathematical relationships of the cover type are translated to the book's spine.

Happy accident! The small squares designed to prevent the use of an uncleared stock photograph were recreated once the hi-res photo was obtained [without the squares].

Each cover concept presented had a distinct concept explained in a introductory page. The unused concept here is typography evocative of a skull and crossbones.
